NUP Chairperson for Kwania & three other NUP members released on police bond

Bongoni Okwir Ojok, the National Unity Platform-NUP Chairperson for Kwania District, and three others have been released on police bond.

Ojok, Charles Ogwang, the NUP Mobilizer for Kwania District and two other NUP officials from Kampala whose identities were not established were released on police bond on Monday after they were charged with disobedience of unlawful order and intention to hold an activity likely to spread COVID-19 under SD ref. No. 26/6/2021.

The NUP officials were arrested on Wednesday when they reportedly went to the police at Kwania CPS to seek permission from the District Police Commander Edith Basalirwa to allow them to conduct NUP meetings to mobilize votes for their party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine.

When they reached the police station, they were reportedly ordered to hand over their mobile phones and subsequently detained by police at Kwania Central Police Station who immediately transferred them to Lira Central Police Station following a directive by the North Kyoga RPC.

James Ekaju, the North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, says that the NUP officials were released on police bond on Monday. Ekaju said the suspects will continue reporting to police as investigations into the matter are underway.

Ojok says the arrest was meant to threaten them to stop supporting NUP. He, however, said he has resumed normal activities of the party geared towards canvassing votes for Kyagulanyi.
