Breaking News : EC summons Bobi Wine over mass rallies

Justice Simon Byabakama the Electoral Commission Chairman has summoned presidential candidates Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine) of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and FDC’s Patrick Oboi Amuriat to respond to allegations of flouting the set campaign guidelines.

The two candidates are expected to appear before the commission on Monday next week “without fail.”

In the letters summoning them, Byabakama pointed out that the candidates had adamantly refused to conduct their campaigns in line with the set standard operating procedures meant to prevent the spread of Covid19

“In spite of the existence of the said guidelines, you have continued to ignore and/or neglected observing the Standard Operation Procedures (SOPS) by holding mass rallies in contravention of the established Standard Operation Procedures intended to control the spread of the Corona virus, thereby risking the lives of the people,” he said.

“In the process, this has resulted in unwarranted occasional confrontations with security personnel; a case in point at Mbarara on 17 and 18th of November, 2020, among others, and processions en-route to your campaign venues, among others,” he wrote referring to recent confrontations between Amuriat and Police.”

“In light of the foregoing, you are invited in person without fail, to meet the Commission on Monday, 14. December, 2020, at 11:00am to respond to the above issues and chat a way forward.”

This development comes after FDC’s Amuriat announced that he will not be holding any discussions with the Electoral Commission concerning the conduct of election campaigns.

Amuriat, who recently came under pressure from FDC leaders to discuss with the Commission on how to avoid clashes with security, said such a meeting would be “a waste of time.”
