Uganda Police Hunt for NUP Supporter Over Online Posts

Police in Uganda say they are reviewing a series of online posts and interactions linked to Namakajjo George, a National Unity Platform (NUP) supporter from Kasubi, Kawaala in Kampala District.

A case has been registered in Mukono, accusing him of violating the country’s Cyber Harassment and Misuse of Social Media.

According to police, his activity on social media1 amount to harassment, with officials arguing that such content could disturb public order and demean government leadership. Investigators describe the matter as serious under Uganda’s digital laws and have stepped up efforts to trace his whereabouts.

Human rights defenders, however, caution that the crackdown risks silencing ordinary citizens. They argue that prosecuting people for online expression could discourage youth from participating in political debate, particularly as many young Ugandans use social media as their primary platform for activism.

Critics further note that the case underscores Uganda’s struggle to balance state security with the protection of digital freedoms. Rights groups insist that enforcement of the law must not come at the cost of legitimate political speech.

Should he be convicted, Namakajjo risks imprisonment, reflecting the tensions between political expression and government oversight in Uganda.
