President Museveni advises cultural leaders on regressive norms

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has advised cultural institutions in Uganda to get rid of all the old-fashioned and non-developmental cultural norms and Practices.

The president in his speech read by the state minister of northern Uganda Grace Freedom Kwiocwiny during the 13th coronation anniversary of Alur King Ubimu Philip Rauni Ularker III  on October 28, at Parombo Town Council in Nebbi district said,  his government restored cultural institutions in 1993 as a symbolic recognition of setting up cultural administration which is a requisite for better organization of production and welfare.

The president also commended the Kingdom for its better cordial relationship with the government.

” It is not possible to develop cultures without involving the traditional institutions, Cultural leaders must therefore ensure that African customs are observed regarding marriage, etiquette etc. It is also important to note that there are some cultural practices that are regressive and therefore need to be changed because they infringe on human rights, The examples of such are early marriages, and wife inheritance amongst others” The president said in a speech read by the state minister of northern Uganda Grace freedom Kwiocwiny.

Some of the cultural practices that the Alur Kingdom for years has been fighting is the practice of early marriage and teenage pregnancies that its cases have been rife in the Kingdom for the past three years.

The government of Uganda has been against some unfavourable cultural norms and Practices like female genital mutilation (FGM), early marriage, and wife inheritance amongst others. Some of the practices are deeply rooted in society that the Government say needs high support especially the cultural leaders.
