Zombo heartless mother survives lynching upon dumping baby in pit latrine

A heartless   woman has survived lynching in Zombo after allegedly disposing off  her newborn baby into a pit latrine shortly after giving birth.

The incident occured  on Sunday March 16, 2025 at Zingili cell, Zingili Ward, Paidha town council.

The Woman has been only identified as Brenda, a resident of Zingili Cell who local leaders say was staying separately with the husband.

Concerns arose when neighbours noticed the woman no longer appeared pregnant. Upon being confronted, she revealed the horrifying details, prompting the charged  community to dismantle the latrine to recover the baby’s body.

Michael Kerango, the vice chairperson LCI Zingili cell, confirmed the incident, adding police rescued her   after an  irate mob attempted to lynch her.

Charles Ovona, the general Secretary LCI Zingili cell, notes that neighbors discovered blood stains in the  compound of the baby’s mother.

Meanwhile Innocent Otingcwinyu, the LCI chairperson Zingili Cell, condemned the incident, calling upon parents to take full responsibilities of their families.

” She neither  exhibited any  Apparent Mental Illness nor   provided  any explanation for her actions, Parents need to be responsible, the lady might have been lacking support from her husband who is not even known” Otingcwinyu said in an interview.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described the harrowing sight of the baby, with the placenta and umbilical cord still attached, lying deep in the latrine.

Detectives from Paidha Central Police station visited the scene, retrieved the body and conveyed it to Paidha Health Center III Mortuary for postmortem.

As the suspect awaits her fate in the cell  of Paidha Central Police station,  the incident has reignited concerns about the increasing cases of child neglect in the region. 

Previous Cases 

In November last year, a woman equally sparked an outrage in Mundel Parish, Nyapea Sub-County, after dumping her newborn baby in a pit latrine. The baby died Shortly.

A similar case has been recently registered at Mawa cell, Omua ward, Paidha town council.

Possible causes 

Stakeholders attribute these alarming acts to factors such as family disputes, a lack of parental responsibility, entrenched cultural beliefs, and gender-based violence.

Community members and local leaders called for swift action to ensure justice is served and to address the underlying issues contributing to such tragedies.
