Chaotic moment erupted at Paidha central police station in Zombo District when a dozen of youths stormed the station to forcefully grab a suspect from a cell on Tuesday, 11 June 2024.

During the fracas, one only identified as Derick was shot at the scene as he attempted to grab a police officer’s gun forcing him to fire two live bullets and one injuring the victim’s leg.

The injured was immediately rushed to Goli Health IV and later  refered to Nebbi General Hospital for  further management police say.

The Zombo District Police Commander Supretendant of Police Nelson Nahabwe confirmed the incident adding that the officers shot the victim in self defense as a group of rowdy blockers attempted to grab one suspect from the cell at around 4:00 Pm .

He said the victim also kicked the police officers in an attempt to aid the escape of the suspect identified as Orom Innocent who  was in a handcaft.

” Yesterday we had an incident of shooting in self defense. There was a suspect who was picked from the community on the charge of assault , so all of a sudden a group of blockers came and stormed the police with a mission of rescuing him from Police custody, in the process they were fighting the police officers and one of them attempted to grab a gun from a police officer , so the police officer in the extraction of his duty for self defense ended up shooting somebody called Derick to protect the gun” Nahabwe explained.

The case is registered under SD REF:38/11/06/2024 at Paidha central police station.

Orom was earlier arrested over allegedly assaulting a Congolese driver who reported the case to Paidha Police the DPC revealed in an interview thus prompting the charged youths to attack the station in an attempt to free the suspect Orom. But the police managed to rearrest  and locked  him up in the cell.

Meanwhile Robert Jakony, the  2021 National resistant movement flag bearer for Paidha Town Council who double as the Chairperson Paidha Black Angels football club was equally  arrested on allegation of inciting the rowdy youth. By press time he was behind bars at Paidha central police station.

However, the LC III chairman Paidha Town Council Innocent Geofrey Onega  condemned the youth’s  behavior of attacking the police station urging them to desist from the unlawful act.

He appealed to the youths to always involve the leaders Incase they are dissatisfied with security such that the matter can be resolved in harmony.

However, the victim Derick, is said to be in stable condition at Nebbi General Hospital.
