The NRM Vice Chairperson Buganda region Hon Godfrey Kiwanda has come out to urge the public to be vigilant in the fight against the notorious Ebola disease that is spreading at a very fast rate in the country.
According to Kiwanda, Ugandans should take their lives seriously and stop politicizing everything that happens in the country quoting a few individuals who said that government is trying to use the Ebola saga to swindle billions of tax payers money.
Kiwanda says Ugandans should know that Ebola is a reality and has already killed a number of people already and thus people should adhere to the Ministry of Health directives if we are to defeat the disease.
Unlike Covid 19 which is airborne, Ebola can be avoided since its spread after one gets into physical contact with an infected person. Kiwanda says people should suspend the usual social acts like shaking hands, hugging each other and unnecessary visitation to curb its spread.
The outbreak of Ebola began in September in a rural part of central Uganda. It spread earlier this month to Kampala, a city of more than 1.6 million people, by a man who had come from the Kassanda district to seek medical treatment and later died.
There have been more than 100 confirmed and probable cases in Uganda since the start of the outbreak, including at least 44 deaths, according to statements by the health ministry and the World Health Organization.
The virus that is circulating in Uganda is the Sudan strain of Ebola, for which there is no proven vaccine, unlike the more common Zaire strain that spread during recent outbreaks in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.
There is a rumor of an upcoming lockdown of Kampala and Wakiso District to prevent the further spread of Ebola but the government has not yet come out to clarify on the matter.
