Sad News: Death toll rises to 30 from Tharaka Nithi bus accident in Kenya

The number of people who died after the Modern Coast bus they were travelling in plunged into the Tharaka Nithi bridge on Sunday has risen to 30.

This is after six more bodies were on Monday morning retrieved from the wreckage. Police said 13 others were nursing critical injuries as the search for more bodies which might still be remaining in the river entered the second day.

Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner Nobert Komora on Sunday night confirmed that the injured were receiving treatment at the Chogoria and Chuka hospitals.

According to reports, the bus was ferrying passengers from Maua to Mombasa before the 6:30 pm accident at the Tharaka Nithi bridge.

Several photos and videos shared online showed the mangled wreckage of the bus strewn on the hillside near the infamous Tharaka Nithi blackspot.

Part of the wreckage could be seen in the river.

Police officers and rescue teams at the accident scene said the bus likely lost brakes, hitting an oncoming vehicle before plunging 40 feet into the river below.
